Low back pain can be due to disc degeneration, disc herniation, facet joint degeneration, muscular spasms or spinal stenosis. In most cases, it’s common for the spinal muscle to stay in a shortened and tight position and this is the body’s protective mechanism to avoid any further aggravation. The disadvantage of this muscular tightness can lead to the development of trigger points (tight painful bands like structures) or simply this tightness will delay your recovery and rehab.

What are trigger point injections?

Injections into trigger points can help to treat lower back pain. One or more trigger points can cause the pain and tenderness associated with myofascial referred pain around your back or in your legs.

An injection into a trigger point can relieve myofascial pain, particularly in the lower back, neck, shoulders, arms, and legs. Your muscles may have painful trigger points that are tender to pressure or contact and cause pain in movement. They may develop as a result of recent trauma or from repeated microtrauma that stresses the muscle fibres. The muscle fibres become constricted as a result. When you rub your muscle, these knots can occasionally be felt. Local anaesthetic injections with or without corticosteroids are frequently used for trigger point injections.

Most often treated muscle groups using trigger point injections are:

  • A deep muscle in your lower back (Quadratus lumborum).
  • A muscle in your hip (Gluteus Medius, Piriformis)
  • The muscle that extends over the back of your neck and shoulders (Trapezius).
  • A muscle on the sides of your neck (Levator scapulae).

Certain sorts of discomfort or problems can be brought on by trigger points. For instance, when the piriformis muscle develops a trigger point, then this additional tightness can cause some discomfort to your sciatic nerve. This ultimately can cause numbness or pain in your buttock or run down the back of your leg.
